Recipe For After Childbirth Dietary Care

In Asia, Pig trotters with sweet vinegar is a popular dish among the ethnic Chinese and is an important dish for after childbirth care.

Mothers who have just delivered their babies are the eat this dish (plus a few other dishes) for most part of their confinement period.


Confinement period is the 30 days after delivery where mother will need to have special dietary intake to nurse her health back. It is believed that the pregnancy process has significantly weaken a mother and drained her of vital stored nutrients in the body. A mother who eats right and well during this 30 day period is able to build her health back to if not better than pre-pregnancy state.

Usually, a live-in and well-trained confinement lady would be hired for that month whose role is to prepare the meals of the mother and to care for the baby.

Here is an easy to prepare Pig Trotters with sweet vinegar recipe for those who are keen to try the dish. Anyone can eat it as it is not exclusively for the mother

One Pig trotter plus the upper part (about 1 kg), cut into pieces - (substitute with pork belly if you are adverse to the idea of eating trotters)

5 hard boiled eggs

One bottle of Black Sweet Rice Vinegar (750ml)

250g of brown sugar

500g of ginger (peeled)

1 teaspoon of salt

2 teaspoon of sesame oil

Boil the Pig trotters for 5 mins and drain, then put aside.
Fry the ginger in sesame oil till fragrant and put aside.
Pour the rice vinegar into a pot, add in sugar, salt and ginger, simmer for one hour.
Add the pig trotters, eggs into the vinegar mixture and simmer for another 30 mins.

Eat with rice and you can reheat it and eat the following day which would taste even better. The sweet soury taste is very appetizing.

This dish helps in removing residual blood clots from the womb (if any) and warms the body.
