Defining stress continues to shed more knowledge to society as modern definitions continue to be seen to differ from traditional definitions and views of stress. This is simply to say that there are several views of stress which have given rise to many definitions. The place to start when describing stress is when the research on stress started and there are several researchers who are credited to having defined the stress from their findings and one of them is Hans Selye who is one of the founding fathers of stress research. In 1956 he his view suggesting that stress is not a bad thing and it all depends on how you take it. He saw that there was a kind of stress that was helpful to us and this is the kind that made us achieve things and the other harmful stress was the stress emanating from fear and failure.

Richard Lazarus brought fourth a definition that is commonly accepted and seems to make a lot of sense and it is that stress is the feeling or a condition that comes when our personal resources are not greater than the demands all around us. Indeed stress will leave you feeling as if you have no hope or way out of a particular situation. When thinking about the definition of stress you will realize that stress affects people individually. Therefore, people will define stress from their own experiences which might be very different. We cannot give a blanket statement about stress and this is the reason why you have to go beyond the definition of stress and know every aspect of stress.

Stress in the modern day has come to be known as a condition caused by stressors. They are causes of anxiety and worry which facilitate the occurrence of stress. They are of many kinds and are brought about by the events and happenings all around us. Examples of stressors are death, divorce, loss of job or business, lack of money, health issues and many more. The above factors happen to us everyday and this is the reason why stress is also part of our lives. Stress when severe can cause a lot of harm to the body and even death. You therefore need to put in mind that a little stress might be acceptable but, when you start suffering because of it, it is unacceptable. You need information on how to cope and deal with stress.

Firstly, know that you need to keep a positive attitude which is vital to avert stress. Make sure you keep busy because when you are not occupied, you will start to entertain thoughts that will contribute to your regress rather than to your progress. The first step in overcoming stress is to identify what the stressor is in your case and when you know the source, you can make the necessary steps to ensure that you overcome the challenge and this might be through accepting or adapting to new situations. If there is nothing that you can do about a particular problem, do not spend so much time in anaylzing it, remove your focus on it and move on.
